I feel I get singled out and picked on by controversial people.

Are they taking advantage of my good nature?

If you are too good, people will take advantage of you. You have to find the perfect balance of good and evil to succeed. Helped an old lady across the street? Then go home and steal cable. Run a charity? Take a little off the top for numero uno. No one else is looking out for you, so they probably aren't watching either, which means you can get away with more stuff.
